PB single note in a chord?

Post by k brown »

Did anyone ever do a synth that could apply pitch bend to a single note within a chord, like the Yamaha DX21? I imagine it would require some sort of MIDI note filter (?).

I'm not sure how to realize that on the polystream. On the midi side it is a bit of filtering work, but nothing too spectacular. You just have to somehow define, which of any notes will be affected (could be just the first that's registered, for example). There are some note filters around here, including a chord detector, IIRC, from trog.

In the DX21, one can chose between either the highest or lowest note in the chord being bent.

That sounds very familiar to something that was discussed not long ago, and trog there answered with a chord detector. It may have been you that asked back then

'twasn't I - I just read about this DX21 feature this morning; never heard of it before - are there other synths that can do this?

Most software synths do.

Here's micro pitch in action, controlled by the DAW (Bitwig). https://youtu.be/hBU_IDrSgEE?t=180

And of course, every synth (hardware or software) that supports the new MPE Midi standard, also is capable of it.

Not sure what that has to do with using a MIDI PB wheel to bend just one note in a played chord. I've read a lot a softsynth manuals (including most of u-he's) and I don't recall seeing this option for polyphonic pitch bend.

When you move your pitch bend wheel, you send the same message that is created from the DAW in the example. And MPE is "MIDI Polyphonic Expression", a brand new standard, where each individual note is treated on its own (including pitch bend and other modulations), no matter how many play at once.

Yes.
Diva and Repro are already MPE compatible, and Zebra 2 sort of (rudimentary, you would need to run several instances), Zebra 3 will be MPE compatible.
Repro under MPE video

Btw. it is not magic. Instead of sending a bunch of notes on a midi channel, in MPE mode each note is sent on its own channel, so that all the channel modulators act on one note. With simplest midi setup, that'S 16 note polyphony, but of course you could add more channels by emulating another midi hub and go to 32, 48, 64, etc.
