Troll Xmas: FDN Reverb (Port of MV concept)

Post by wlangfor@uoguelph.ca »

Hello everyone, and Merry Christmas.

So, I mean reverb; I don't like reverb really. I guess that was until I tried a few really fake sounding ones with long decay times.
It's funny, because You know I mean; That's not real; But nice right?
(Love Super Spring Reverb by Roxy though)

So anyways, Martin Vicanek offered us this amazing reverb He made; And I made it snazzy for Christmas. Nice knobs and trimmings, I made sure You can pick dark and bright and proximity and pan as well. BTW, pan does not affect the original signal, just the reverb. So, I mean fantastic right?

In this one I added a cool feature to accentuate the proximity setting and it's choice.

Here's a screenshot:

Ok, love this project; it's My favorite reverb. did some work to prevent crashing during loads.

DL in first post, enjoy :)

OK, so; I've had some issues while making this reverb plugin specifically when loading multiple instances in FL 10 and 12; especially so when the cpu is taxed.

So, with that said I'd hit a snag and thought against using the optimized delay by Trogluddite; And it might work as advertised; Ultimately using less CPU; I'll let people know once I am again using My computer.

Nice reverb , what were the issues you had with this specifically ?

Has a tiny bit or a ringing quality to it with no damping.

I've just had a quick look through the reverb, particularly the delay code, and there's a fundamental difference between the delays used in v3.0.0 and v3.0.4.

The delays in v3.0.0 (much shorter code) are very fast, but have the limitation that the delay time is the same for all four mono4 channels (the delay time is read only from the first mono4 channel of the 'delay' input). That's ideal for a low-CPU stereo echo, but will likely introduce resonances into a reverb tail and/or limit the stereo diffusion (rather like the resonances of a room where the spacing of the walls/floor/ceiling are too closely related.)

In the version v3.0.4 delays, each mono4 channel has its own, independent delay time. It's unavoidable that this requires much additional code, but for this reverb algorithm, you have to pay that price, as independence of the delay lengths is required by the algorithm.

It might be worth us looking through the various delay algorithms that we have, and label them up to make this equal/unequal delay difference clearer (as I have NOT done with my old modules  ). As here, which type you use can make a big difference in some algorithms.

Ah, I see. Well, sufficed to say that the one which you had created does sound good. However, the one that is currently employed has a unique sound. I had found it in an old synthmaker schematic.

All's well. Thanks troggludite.

By the way; Could You give Me a newer version of Your super Reverb?

As far as I know, the version linked below is the most recent version. However, even this version dates back to the SynthMaker days, so not really very recent! Aside from a few extra parameters made controllable, it's just the stock FS reverb algorithm (Freeverb) but assembly optimised as far as I could - speed was definitely the aim rather than polishing the sound.

A question about the stereo widener , where is it at unity ?
1x is mono , so is 2x unity with no effect and 3 full effect ?
