My big concern about mid and side is really, you need to use two instances. Then draw from the two as a matter of amplification, amplifying the stereo signal after the fact.
I found it was relevant to make the mid to 0.3 to mix with the 100% side so that side was perceivable. But all in all, in the end it is possible. I'm now adding fractional delay so that it works in tandem with stereo width.
