For equalizing speaker drivers, like for battling against cone breakup in the high frequencies, most of the time you need a combination of LPF, BPF and HPF, for implementing a kind of refined notch.

In the deep bass end, most of the time a Linkwitz Transform (BassBoost/Equalizer) will exhibits the same need.

A simple shelving tone control (Bass/Treble) also requires that you combine the LPF, BPF and HPF outputs of a BiQuad.
