Export as VST FX and have midi input.
Am I missing something here or does midi input not work if you export as VST FX ?

Yes, it is very simple. VSTi (instruments) must have a midi inputs only. If the plugin has a mono stream input it is automatically a VST effect, even if it additionally has midi input. You can turn any VSTi schematic into VST effect by adding dummy mono output to them.
