Whole lotta shapin' going on: some waveshaper toys

So, I've been playing around with waveshaping, mostly for eventual use in other things, but also just for fun. Here's a few things that I thought might be useful to others.

First up, here's a schematic with a couple of things from the MusicDSP source code archive. The test instrument lets you switch between the two. These are just names I made up to identify them to myself, I don't think they have "real" names. The one called "SlimFat" was used in the synth I posted in the "FlowStone music" thread.

Here's one I called "accidental shaper" because I was going for a Chebyshev waveshaper, but I made one of those serendipitous mistakes that gave a cool result. I haven't tried it on anything but the test setup here, but it seemed like it might be fun elsewhere so I saved it.

Here's a "foldback" type shaper. This is not the only way to do it, and I'm not sure if it's the best way, but here it is.

Here's a multi-stage thing I came up with by toying around with some ideas I found in the DAFX book ( http://www.dafx.de/ ). It uses a rectifier to act as an octave doubler in addition to the distortion. Was fun on guitar, might be fun elsewhere too.

I like them all!

One thing that's always fascinated me is to hear what a waveform looks like. My very first encounter with this was back in the 60s when they showed a modular Moog synthesiser on a TV programme called Tomorrow's World. The guy turned a knob and the waveform changed the sound. Simpe stuff, but I was, from that point on, totally hooked on electronic sound generation made by any means.

Me too. It's funny how much pleasure I get from watching a waveform on a scope. Thanks for the video link, I love that kind of thing. Watching synth documentaries really inspires me!
