The Element of Surprise

Post by k brown »

For those that have never encountered this - you must give it a spin (if you have a system that will run it; it's a very old UGO SynthEdit creation).

It's mid-blowing how often this creates not just usable, but impressive sounds.

Any idea how something like this works; has to be more than just param randomization - the results are too good, too often.

My guess is that it's really just a synth loaded with a whole lot of really good presets and it's just the preset selection that's randomized - if you hit the button enough times, maybe you'd start hearing the sounds repeat? Never tested it.

I'm pretty sure it's another example of procedural generation, combined with carefully chosen propability ranges. I talked about this in another thread.

There are quite a few of those out there (and also midi effects and audio effects).

The thread title reminded me of the HGS Phase Shifter:

Some seriously unexpected things can happen with that widget if you feed it the right inputs.

@ tulamide - but would such a thing produce such stellar results so often, as one gets with TES?

The answer is a clear
only with procedural generation plus carefully chosen propability ranges can you get every preset stunning. Pure randomness will sound horrific at least 50% of the time.

Thanks for this post thread, it reminds Me to say that I think random presets is something that makes a synth.
